"Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let the sea resound, and all that is in it. Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them; let all the trees of the forest sing for joy."-Psalm 96:11-12
I absolutely love our backyard. It is our backyard that reminds me daily of the pasture behind my parents house filled with the old oak trees that have stood there for generations. When I look above, the sky is hidden by the leaves of these trees, but occasionally there are little breaks that display the beautiful clear blue sky sometimes dotted by clouds or the trail of a plane. On pretty days, I like to do laps in my yard as Lilly and Elbie follow behind or bring me toys to toss. And then there are the days when my backyard is my escape. The place I escape to when the world is just a little too much or I need to be reminded of God's beauty.
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." -Matthew 5:4
Recently, the world loss an amazing lady who I feel blessed to have known. Standing in Wal-Mart, I read the text about her passing and my eyes filled with tears as I thought about her family. She was gone too soon. I have so many wonderful memories of this individual. Her amazing musical talent, the smile that was always on her face, the openness of their home to all of her children's friends, the BBQ sandwiches after church on Sunday, how she always seemed to be in the kitchen when I walked in their house, and how she seemed to love her walks in the woods and along the road.
When I got home from Wal-Mart, I went out to the yard and started walking. As I walked, I prayed for her family and how I was thankful that my parents had the opportunity to spend time with her and her husband last week. I was thankful that she was able to experience the joy of grandchildren. Looking up to the sky in what had been cloudy all day, the sun peaked through the leaves and the beautiful blue sky was streaked with a trail from a plane. In today's world, I rarely go anywhere without my cell phone but I will say leaving my cell phone in the house brought me great peace as I listened to the sounds and viewed the world. I like to think that Charlotte was the sunlight peaking through the clouds that day and reminding me that she was now an angel.
"For God so loved the world that He gave his one and only son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have life everlasting." -John 3:16
Yes, I will miss seeing her walking along the road or out in her yard, but every time I hear a blue grass song, eat a muffin (she always made us muffins for our rides to school) or see a Red Bud tree (she and my mom walked in the woods a few summers ago to find me one), I will think of this amazing lady who was like a second mom to me growing up. While we may never understand why God calls some individuals home sooner than we prefer, He does promise a life ever-lasting.
